Tonight in our support group, we discussed medical accommodations for both school and work. I shared my experience of returning to school six months after my transplant. With a chronic illness diagnosis, I received key accommodations that made returning to school possible. The accommodations I receive included attending classes virtual when needed, flexible attendance, recorded lectures, frequent breaks as needed, text-to-speech software from the Office of Specialized Student Services, a distraction-reduced exam environment, and extended time for exams. If you’re navigating work, reach out to your employer and explore ADA accommodations. For school, the Student Disabilities Services program can truly help open doors.

Just found this site today. Jumping right in with my first post.

Male, 57, ALD, surprisingly, I wasn't a big drinker, except in my twenties.

Celiac and vitiligo are the autoimmune diseases that I was diagnosed with about 16 years ago. I'm used to sudden, necessary lifestyle changes. -

We, my wife and I, finally called the hospital to schedule my liver transplant for May 2026.

My wife will be my living donor. It has been a struggle for me to agree to that.

There are still so many unanswered questions. I work with my team and therapist. We have a small business that relies on my wife and me to be present and working.

In the last few years, we took up recreational running, and now I've started running in the gym and lifting weights. My doc says I need to lift to maintain muscle. Sometimes I get too competitive and run faster and lift more weight than my doctor would approve of.

I want to be in the best shape I can be again.

I hope recovery will not take more than 3 months before I can return to my desk. My wife gets scared when I speak of potential risks and side effects.

Would love to hear what the real post-transplant life will look like.

Has anyone been able to run again post-transplant and live a (somewhat) normal life?

Thanks for reading this!

Hi All,

My name is Daisy Friedman, and I'm a small bowel, liver, and pancreas recipient. I had Short Gut Syndrome as a result of gastroschisis and then went into TPN-induced liver failure. I received my transplant over 19 years ago in Omaha, Nebraska, and have been fortunate enough not to have needed another transplant since, and have had very minimal complications.

I live in New York City and make films mostly about chronic illness and disability in an attempt to raise awareness and build community about life after transplant and how to live a full life with long-term illness. So excited to meet everyone here and make some connections! :)

Hello friends, I went back to work after 4 years pre and post transplant. It is a small part time job and the agency I work for knew my work pre-transplant and they knew about my transplant. They have been accommodating with days off for doc appointments and hospital visit call outs. I am now looking for another job, maybe full time. My question is how did you determine to disclose or not to disclose your transplant and the related health challenges to a new employer? The processing of when and if seems overwhelming.

Greetings! I’m darth_james. My second kidney transplant was three years ago and it’s working well. I have severe bilateral hearing loss that mostly developed during periods when I was on dialysis. I wear two hearing aids and it’s an obstacle but it’s not easy finding suitable work with hearing impairment and a suppressed immune system.

I would also like to hear what others might suggest for a part time job.

I’m pretty sure we were all speechless after that amazing chat.

what was your favourite take away?

I love how Alison talks about finding beauty in her story, not letting the hard parts define who she is and the way she’s turned it into this beautiful publication to help others.

you can find out more about Alison, and get your copy of the magazine at bonusdaysmag.com

we’ve already suggested a read party (magazine club?) once the next issue comes out!
